Junior lessons
The new sailing season is just about to start. So, time to write to me, Elaine, at asyctraining@gmail.com to enrol any juniors who are interested in lessons. Fun on and off the water. RYA certificates, learn how to sail a boat, capsize it and make friends. Join in with racing.
Lesson dates:
The block of 9+1 sessions start on the weekend of 20th/21st April. Sessions run on either Saturdays or Sunday between 10:30am and 13:00, culminating in the Junior regatta on Sunday 26th May followed by the move to Stonehaven. The last session before the summer holidays will be on 22nd/23th June. There will be a further session on 24th/25th August(after summer holidays) to encourage all to join in with club racing.
The block of 10 lessons will cost £120 to keep our ageing fleet of club boats going. Juniors have to be ASYC members (Junior membership £35).
All the sessions are taught by volunteers. These sessions would not run without their boundless enthusiasm and hard work. We ask that parents remain on site during the sessions and help run the sessions I need willing volunteers to drive/crew power boats, be beach master, help launch boats, look after the galley and keep the club boats in tip top shape (any offers?)We also hope to offer some parent sailing alongside the Juniors this year, utilising our larger club boats. However, this will be weather dependent and at the discretion of the Senior Instructor on the day – we need to ensure that safety cover is adequate for the Juniors and all helper positions are filled. More information on this at a later point.
Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis, but preference will be given to returners and last year’s club members, but we find places for new members too, so don’t be shy putting your name forward, even if you are not a current club member. We try hard to find a boat for everyone who applies.
The summer week is scheduled for 12th-16th August (followed by the club Open regatta on 17th/18th August). This will cost £100 per nose this year. Registration for this will be in May – we will try hard to fit in as many kids in the Junior lesson program as possible – just need to find enough boats, RIBs and instructors.

Deadline for lesson registration: 9th February 2019
Membership and lesson fees can be paid after a place has been offered, but needs to be paid prior to the first lesson.
ASYC Regatta Report
The annual ASYC regatta was held on the weekend of the 11th & 12th of August. The event was attended by 42 boats with starts for RS400, Laser, Laser Radial, D-Zero, Blaze, Solo & Handicap.

On the Saturday, a light southerly breeze appeared in time for the first race which gently built over the afternoon. All fleets behaved impeccably with 3 races being completed at the first attempt. The conditions brought close racing and all to play for on the Sunday.
A BBQ was held after racing on the Saturday evening with a great atmosphere in the bar as the sailors debated the day’s proceedings.
Overnight the breeze had filled in and Sunday looked like being a more interesting affair.

As the fleet launched the breeze dropped and left a short swell with a strong rising tide. 3 races were run with quick turnaround to ensure the 6 race weekend format was completed, making the best of the conditions. Overall weekend results for the 7 fleets were:

Scottish Schools Sailing Competition – Brown Cup
Scottish Schools Sailing Competition (Brown Cup)
The Scottish Schools Sailing Competition, or Brown Cup as its more commonly know is an annual event run by Loch Earn Sailing Club (LESC). This year saw a huge representation from ASYC members, who made up a quarter of the competitors, making up local school teams from Robert Gordons, Albyn, and Mackie, with ASYC sailors also entering for Ellon, Lathallan as well as individual entries. Well done to all our sailors who made the journey, and to all the parents who supported them.
LESC put on a two day training weekend before the Brown Cup on the Monday. Many of our ASYC junior sailors and support crew took full advantage of what Loch Earn Sailing Club had to offer, fantastic coaching, BBQs on the loch shore, sunshine and good company. The weather over the weekend was variable with lots of sunshine, but both light wind conditions, and heavy wind during a sudden thunderstorm. Also memorable onshore was the “wrecking ball” (you’ll need to ask the juniors about that) and the mighty midge.
Race day on the Monday saw a fairly consistent breeze rising to about Force 4 in the afternoon, and the three races ran back-to-back with little delay.
The results for our ASYC sailors are below. Special mention should go to those who progressed during the racing. In the Topper fleet Shona Coull and Mac Leven improved significantly from race to race and by the last race were close on the heels of some of the more experienced Topper sailors. Harvey Western showed great character to continue in the last race after equipment failure left him without a kicking strap or mainsheet for a period. And in the Feva’s those of us onshore watched the ASYC contest between Nathan McCabe and Isla Collier in one Feva who just pipped Alistair Collier and Hannah McKenzie in another Feva.
For many of our junior sailors this will have been the most competitive racing and the most congested start line that they have experienced. Well done to all, and we hope that it’s given you an appetite to return to the Brown Cup next year and perhaps for some ASYC club racing or even other events in between.
